“Nymphs” depicts two women in bright blue water with their shoulders just above the water. Their hair compliments the water, each woman having a slightly different shade of blue. The woman in the front has her chest exposed as she looks towards the viewer with blank eyes. In ancient greek mythology, a nymph is a personification of a particular aspect of nature who are usually depicted as maidens. In this painting, the nymphs personify the water, and their lack of eyes suggests that they are a symbol of something greater than their individual self. Their own beauty reflects the preciousness and beauty of nature which must be protected.
