People have lost their family or friends on the frontlines of war. There is also the ever-present threat of missile attacks that could come at any moment. Despite this, the painting’s subject appears calm, as she looks at the viewer with certainty. Ukrainians have had to find a way to continue to live, in the arms of death yet unafraid.
