‘Refugee’ is the first of a series of portraits depicting Ukrainian refugees. Lapshin exaggerates the proportions and features on the face of the subject. He thereby removes her unique features and allows her face to instead become a universal representation of refugees. The green skin likens her to an alien, illustrating her as foreign and incomprehensible. She looks up at the viewer with confusion, innocence and teary eyes — the look of someone who was forced to flee to this new, uncomfortable world.
