‘Rising Noise’ is a 2 metre still life depicting objects from Lapshin’s family home, with a yellow skull hidden amongst the items. Lapshin uses this piece to illustrate the underlying presence of war for a family. Amidst the ordinary objects are symbols of the surrounding war. Small plastic soldiers stand as if left by a child in the middle of playing in an imaginary world. Now, this world has become a reality, the soldiers an integral part of life. The title ‘Rising noise’ gives the piece a feeling of unease, as if something is approaching to disrupt this stillness.
