‘Consternation’ forms a part of Lapshin’s latest series which delves into escapism, exploring his teenage fantasies. Deliberately naive, Lapsin imitates the comic book style from his teenage years, contrasting this with his artistry in oil paint. This grotesque fairytale creature stands in a daze, appearing to be frozen in horror. The teenage innocence of comic books is tainted with the experiences of a matured artist — living through a pandemic and an ongoing war. 

Lapshin returns to the subject of comics from his youth, restructuring it through the lens of metamodernism. Through this piece, Lapshin expresses his appreciation and sincere love for comics, as they have shaped the aesthetics and visual language of his own art style.
